Judith recently visited BDAT St John’s Church of England Primary School in Bradford to explore the remarkable sustainability efforts of BDAT schools. The event highlighted the Trust’s commitment to renewable energy and the role that schools play in driving the green skills agenda.
During her visit, Judith met with the school’s Eco Council to discuss their ideas for a greener and more sustainable school, and important issues such as road safety and good mental health and wellbeing for young people.
Bradford Diocesan Academies Trust (BDAT) was established to support and sponsor both Church of England and non-Church of England academies in Bradford on behalf of the Diocese of Leeds. The Trust collaborates with its Academies to provide a network of support and challenge, working towards improved outcomes for all children and young people.
Matthew Hill, Deputy CFO at BDAT, shared valuable insights into the Trust’s sustainability ambitions and plans to further integrate green initiatives across its schools. With over 2.2MW of solar capacity installed across 16 schools, BDAT stands out as a leader in sustainable energy solutions. Individual schools benefit from the savings generated, with the autonomy to reinvest these funds into areas they deem most impactful, such as learning resources and other priorities.
Judith said:
“It is inspiring to see students at St John’s so deeply involved in the process with Solar for Schools.”
“By investing in solar energy, BDAT is leading the way in sustainability. It is vital that initiatives like these are supported to help schools reduce their energy costs while teaching students about sustainability. It has been wonderful to see the impact of the investment in these projects first-hand today.”
Matthew Hill, Deputy CFO of BDAT, added, “At BDAT, we are committed to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint. Our schools have already made significant strides with solar energy, and we’re excited to continue expanding our efforts”.
Encouraging Other Schools to Follow BDAT’s Lead
Solar for Schools helps schools save money, reduce carbon emissions, and inspire the next generation through sustainability education. With over 250 schools already benefiting from its solar installations, the organisation combines practical energy solutions with hands-on learning to promote a greener future.
“It’s great to see MPs championing sustainability initiatives in their constituencies, with BDAT setting a strong example by saving on energy costs,” said Richard Turner, Strategic Partnership Manager at Solar for Schools.
“We hope more schools will follow BDAT’s example, embracing solar energy and sustainability education to reduce their carbon footprint and inspire the next generation of environmental leaders”.
