Today, the Deputy Speaker and Labour MP for Bradford South, Judith Cummins, Chaired the Renters’ Rights Bill in Parliament, which will provide several new protections for those who rent. It includes a ban on ‘no-fault’ evictions.
More widely, it will give greater security and stability to people to ensure that they can stay in their homes for longer, build lives in their communities, and avoid the risk of homelessness.
The bill will give tenants more time to move if evicted, introduce an Ombudsman with the ability to handle complaints and enforce solutions, and end the practice of bidding for rent.
It would also make it illegal for landlords to discriminate against those with children or in receipt of benefits and strengthen rights for owners of pets in rented properties.
Speaking about the Bill, the Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Housing said:
“There can be no more dither and delay. We must overhaul renting and rebalance the relationship between tenant and landlord. This Bill will do just that and tenants can be reassured this Government will protect them.”
Following the debate, Judith said:
“No renter should be left feeling insecure about their future.”
“A functioning rental sector provides flexibility for those who need it and serves as a stepping stone for those aspiring to homeownership.”
“Renters across Bradford South deserve proper protections under the law.”
