Judith held a meeting with the Minister, Justin Madders MP, to raise resident's concerns about the 24/7, round-the-clock blight of fireworks.
Constituents in Bradford South have long-complained about the impact of the anti-social use of fireworks on the community occurring on a daily basis.
Last year, Judith introduced the Fireworks (Noise Limits) Bill into Parliament, which was designed to limit the upper noise limit of commercial fireworks to 90 decibels (the equivalent sound level of a ringing telephone).
As it currently stands, fireworks which can be bought by the general public can reach 120 decibels, which is the equivalent sound level of a chainsaw. The RSPCA previously supported Judith’s Bill, stating:
“We believe that by introducing measures like this, we can better prioritise the safety and well-being of animals and vulnerable people...we urge Parliamentarians across the House to work with Judith on these welcome proposals.”
Whilst Judith’s Bill did not become law due to the calling of a General Election, Judith met with the Minister responsible for regulating fireworks, Justin Madders MP, to discuss constituents’ concerns.
Speaking after the meeting, Judith said:
“I welcome my meeting with the Minister, who I know is taking these concerns very seriously.”“These concerns cannot be ignored, and I know the impact that the antisocial use of fireworks is having on constituents’ day-to-day lives.”
“I am delighted to have ensured that the voices of people in Bradford South are being heard at the very highest levels of Government.”
