Judith Cummins MP (Bradford South) has welcomed news of a significant funding boost that will secure the future of a vital community garden space in Bradford South.
Judith provided key support for a funding application for Wibsey Community Gardens, who have been awarded £235,917 as part of the latest round of the Community Ownership Fund. This fund will empower communities to build opportunity and improve their local places.
In addition to being a place for residents to access low-cost fresh fruit and vegetables, Wibsey Community Gardens provides volunteering opportunities and a wide range of activities for residents to learn useful skills including growing fruit and vegetables, cooking, healthy eating, and recycling, all while helping people build confidence and strengthen community links.
In her supporting letter for the group’s funding application, Judith praised the Gardens as a “unique community green space in the heart of Wibsey village”.
“The project does important work to encourage healthy eating and to support people to make more positive health choices.”
Jen White, of Bradford Organic Community Services who run Wibsey Community Garden said the funding will make ‘a huge difference’:
“BOCS are thrilled to be awarded funds for Wibsey Community Gardens from the Community Ownership Funds Programme.
We thank everyone who supported our application and enabled this to happen. We know this will make a huge difference to the Gardens with improvements all over the site but especially to the growing areas and Polytunnels.
The Gardens provide an opportunity for many people to enjoy gardening and arts and craft activities and to have access to organically grown fruit, vegetables and salads, everyone is welcome.
This award will mean we can reach out to more people with a really improved Gardens.”
